WINTER UPDATE FROM NM GAME & FISH re DUMPSTERS & BEARS:

Regarding your question regarding locking the bear proof dumpsters in Angel Fire during the winter. I believe they should be kept locked all year long. I realize this is inconvenient during the winter, but it is important to keep bears from becoming habituated to feeding on human garbage. Male bears in particular do not necessarily hibernate every year and could visit the dumpster at any time annually. It has also been shown in other states (California in the Tahoe Basin in particular) that bears with a steady food supply actually may delay hibernation and/or come out early or even not hibernate if there are good human derived food sources that they can rely on through the winter. Once a bear becomes habituated it's generally only a matter of time before we (NM Game and Fish) will have to destroy the animal.
